Game, Trolling, and Baitfeeder I am not familiar with; they may be used for saltwater fishing or something out of my league. A spinning reel is the “open faced” reel where you see the spool, which is looped by a curved bar called the bail. It is used for all sorts of things, but mostly for using artificial baits and when super precision is needed. They are easy to master and with little practice, you can throw it and finesse it with pinpoint accuracy. Then there is the Spincast reel, which is a cross between the spinner and a baitcast. the most common ones are the Zebco reels, with the Zebco 33 being the most prolific. They are closed faced, and cast with a button on the bottom of the reel. These are extremely easy to use and are the most common reels used by every age group and skill level. I have seen it used as a heavy line catfish reel, a bass buster, and everything in between. It is extremely versatile. The baitcast is an open spool reel. It is the most difficult of the reels to master. The baitcast uses a button to release the bail and allow the spool to free spin. Then, by flipping the rod, the weight of the lure causes the line to feed out until it is stopped. The user has to stop the spool with a method called thumbing the spool. As soon as the lure impacts the water, the spool must be stopped or you will get a backlash, resulting the the dreaded birdsnest. This can be prevented on most baitcast reels by properly setting the drag and cast control magnetic brakes. It just takes practice, but one you have it down, you won’t want to use anything else. They are used for casting artificial baits or variations relating to that. They are extremely responsive and sensitive, which makes them ideal for just about everything artificial.
