where to catch redfish in jacksonville areas???? without a boat?
what kind of tackle should i use??
The Fernandina area directly North of Mayport would be my first choice. Go to Mayport, take the ferry across the St. Johns, and as you drive along A1A (on your way to Fernandina), you will see a variety of pull-offs you can try fishing from. Heck, there are some areas on your WAY to Mayport, (near the Coast Guard Station), you could catch some Reds, Trout, Sheeps, Etc.
Either way, once you get in that general region you will see the obvious spots to pull off the side of the road & fish.
Other areas of interest?
Believe it or not, there are quite a few fishing spots around downtown Jacksonville that COULD have Reds, Trout, Sheephead, and other Saltwater fish. Areas around the Riverwalk near the Bridges could hold some Reds & Trout (depending on Temps, Tide and bait-fish accumulation). Guana State Park, (near Ponte Vedra beach), is another good Redfish hang-out for a shore-bound angler. You would want to fish the Dam area- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guana_River_State_Park
Both the Atlantic Blvd and Beach Blvd bridges spanning the ICW have areas to pull-off and fish.
Tackle???
Depends on HOW you plan to fish and exactly what you want to catch.
Reds VERY rarely take dead Shrimp, dead Squid, or (any) dead bait. In certain areas of the St. Johns River, (where it intersects with the ICW ), you can soak whole, live (or dead) blue crabs and large mullet heads and catch BIG breeder Reds, but most of those hot spots are only accessible by boat.
Soaking a Live Shrimp under a cork OR bumping a 1/4-1/2 OZ Chartreuse Jig & live Mud-minnow, live Shrimp or Finger mullet along the bottom will be your best bait for a Red. Don’t be surprised if you catch a Trout or Flounder using these methods……
You can also try a variety of lures including Weedless Spoons, Jig & 4″ Curly-tail, a Saltwater Spinnerbait, Berkley Saltwater Gulp, Etc.
12 – 14LB Mono with a leader of 17LB Fluorocarbon should be fine for most situations. If you want to use a Braid, (such as Power Pro 6/20 or 8/30) you certainly can, but it’s still advisable to use a leader of Fluro….
7 -8 FT MH Spinning or Casting outfits work fine for most fishing.
I guess the fishing in North Fla has been VERY slow lately due to the recent massive fish kill. You may want to fish for Sheephead instead…….??
