Winter is in full spring in February and in Wisconsin. The state, however, has many events that take place throughout the month that are worth checking out whether you are looking for a day out of the house or for a family vacation. The Fish Creek Winter Festival is an annual winter festival that is held in Fish Creek. The event includes a chili cook-off to keep you warm including sleigh rides, kids obstacle courses, treasure hunts, snowshoe dance contests, a bike toss and bed races. This event is held over two weekends.
The Hot Air Affair is held in Hudson every year. Here you can see more than 50 hot air balloons from across the nation launch for a race over the St. Croix Valley. More than 20,000 visitors gather to watch and a torchlight parade features balloon pilots and crews light up the night with fire from their baskets. The Apostle Island Sled Dog race is held annually in Bayfield. The race features 100 teams of 6 to 8 dogs that race across the scenic landscape of the Apostle Islands for a $5,000 purse. There are two main races. One race is an 80 mile 8 dog race and the other is a 60 mile 6 dog race. There is also a 20 miles sportsman’s race, a 16 and under race as well as a 10 mile family race.
The Christmas Mountain Village Carnival features the nations largest sled-dog weight-pull. The dogs compete for a ton of dog food. Teams from all over the US travel to compete. They also have other activities including winter golf, sleigh rides, sled dog races, turkey bowling, chili cook-off, live entertainment, wood splitting contests and fireworks, held at the Christmas Mountain Village in Wisconsin Dells. The Snowflake Continental Cup International Ski Jumping tournament is held in Westby annually. This tournament includes the top US and foreign skiing competitors competing on the 114-meter hill.
In Eagle River you will find the Annual Klondike Days. This is the nation’s largest winter festival that features a variety of events including dog and horse weight pulls, The Great Northern Lumberjack Competition, chainsaw log carvings, Klondike Craft Show, dog sled rides for kids, and Native American programs. It is all held in an authentic 18th century voyager encampment. More than 15,000 people attend the event each year. All of the event personnel are dressed in authentic clothing from the time period.
