how to setup a czech nymph leeder?
i’m really interested in giving this a bash for the grayling in the river taff but don’t know how to set up the line. i’ll be using a 10ft 4# rod with a floating line so that’s ok but i’m lost from there. ie how long should the leeder be, how far apart should the flies be, casting, which should be the heaviest fly on which dropper or point etc.
i’m quite new to this and can’t find any info anywhere. any help would be much appreciated
First, start with the leader itself — you don’t need a tapered leader, since you won’t be casting in the traditional way. A 7- or 8-foot section of fluorocarbon works nicely because it’s strong and nearly invisible underwater. Make it a little longer so you have extra line to tie the dropper knots and tie it into your flyline.
For a 4# rod, I’d guess you’ll need nothing bigger than 5x and could probably get away with 6x if you’re just going out for grayling. Don’t tie the leader onto your flyline just yet — get it set up first.
Your first fly can be tied directly onto the leader, but you can also use a slightly smaller tippet if you’re going to changing out flies often. From there, measure up about 18 to 20 inches and tie in your first dropper. I like the surgeon’s loop for this job (http://www.animatedknots.com/dropperloop/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website= ) because you can tie short sections of line to the knot, which enables you to remove and replace these sections without having to retie the dropper loops. With knots where the knot and the dropper are one, you’ll eventually use up your droppers and you’ll have to start over. In any case, tie in the first dropper with the knot and method of your choice. The dropper should be about 6 inches or shorter and can be tied in with the same material as the leader (but it can also be as light as you dare to go). Next, measure up 18 to 20 inches and install the second dropper.
Attach flies to the dropper sections and the leader is ready to go. Tie the leader to your fly line using the nail knot (http://www.animatedknots.com/nailknot/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website= ) or with your chosen method and you’re ready to go.
Floating line is fine if your flies are weighted. I suppose you can use splitshot to get the flies down into the water faster, but that’s not really how it’s supposed to work — Czech nymphs are supposed to be heavily weighted. The heaviest fly is on point if you ask me, but I’ve seen articles that say the middle fly should be the heaviest. This has never really been an issue for me because usually all three flies I use are basically the same weight.
To help with strike indication, I have seen people use small sections of fluorescent line or other such contrivances, but actual strike indicators are generally not used in Czech nymphing. I think just watching the butt of your flyline, the bend in the line, and/or watching the fish themselves is truer to the spirit of Czech nymphing. Obviously, that part is up to you.
