How to Turn a Step Ladder into an Easel
Believe it or not, easels are very easy to make yourself. You don’t have to break your wallet buying one, although they may last longer. The easiest way to make an art easel at home is by using the materials you have at hand. Basically, all you have to do is make two V-shaped legs and attach them with a hinge. Here is an easy to follow, step by step demonstration on how to turn your step ladder into an easel.
1. First, drill two holes in the front lip of each step in your aluminum ladder.
2. Then, make two more holes, the same distance apart, in an old piece of wood. (You can simply take this from an old picture frame or railing).
3. Next, you want to bolt through each hole of the rail and the ladder itself.
4. And this will make for a sturdy, cheap, and lightweight easel that can easily fold up and be hung in the shed.
Things to keep in mind:
When creating the middle portion of a home made easel, top stop the legs from splitting, you can connect the middle pieces with a small piece of rope to control the spread. Then, the canvas can be placed on a loose crossbar. The height can also be varied by drilling the holes into the V-shaped legs at different heights while placing pens in the hole to stabilize the cross bar. Another great way to be scrappy is to add another cross bar at the back so that it can hold two canvases at once. Now that is super easy and very affordable.
