Solving a two dimensional collision problem?
a 90 kg person running east has speed of 5 m/s is tackled by a 95 kg person running north with speed of 3 m/s. collision is perfectly inellastic.
a)calculate the speed and direction of the players just after the tackle
b) determine the mechanical energy lost as a result of the collision. Account for the missing energy.
Resultant momentum before collision is
√ [ (90x5)^2 + (95x3)^2 ] = 532.66 kg m s ^[-1]
The direction of this resultant is θ = tan inverse of [285 / 450] = 32.35 degree. From East to north.
After collision both move in this direction.
Momentum after collision is (90 +95) *v.
185 *v = 532.66
v = 2.879 m/s in the direction 32.35 degree from East to north.

Total energy before impact = ½ ( 90 x 25 + 90 x 9) = 1530 J ,using ½ mV^2
Total energy after impact = ½ 185 x 2.879 ^2m = 766.7J
Energy lost due to collision is 763.3J (dissipated as heat energy).
