Fat Minnow
Minnow life span and sexing?
I have 5 minnows I caught in Brushy Creek, Round Rock, Texas, that have lived for well over a year and a half in my aquarium. Four of them are big and got really fat, one even gave birth once, the other one is tiny, easily 3 times smaller then the large ones. Does this sound like sexual dimorphism to anyone else? Does any buddy know how long they might live for?

They look and sound like mosquito fish to me. They’re very similar to guppies; they look similar but duller and are livebearers, but they are hardier and more suited to changes in temperature. The three larger ones will be females and the smaller one is likely the male. You can tell for certain if the male has a pointed gonopodium fin for impregnating the females, whereas the females themselves will just have a fan-shaped fin there. Here’s a good illustration:

If you do have a male and three females, you can bet that the females have given birth many times and they have eaten all of the fry. The reason they’re fat is because female livebearers are always pregnant, but they thankfully control their own population when in tanks. On average they live about 2-3 years, but that may vary a bit depending upon the conditions they live in (temperature, amount of food, etc.).
