what does a fletching jig do and how?!?
i’ve just started researching how to make my own arrows. i’ve come across plenty of photos of fletching jigs and places to buy them… but yet i can’t actually figure out what they do! is it just for cutting the shafts for the nocks and feathers? how does it do this?
A fletching jig holds the arrow to allow you to glue on new vanes or feathers. There is a clamp which holds the new fletching with a small amount of glue in the proper position, either right hand twist or a left hand twist. Once the glue is set then you turn or index the arrow shaft to the next position .Some jigs will have adjustable settings for the degrees between the fletches. Some jigs will do 3 fletch or four fletch. Bitzenburger is the top of the line of jigs but I have used a BPE with a right hand twist for almost 20 years without fail. If you plan on using natural feathers, you will have to match right twist with right wing and vise-versa for the left. They do offer a straight fletch but I could never see any use in it. Always remember to align the broadheads with the fletches.
