Fishfinder Depth
I am looking for a fishfinder/GPS for an 18ft boat kept on lake. Can I get anything good for $300-$400?
The lake has a max depth of 70 ft. I am mostly looking for something to give me the contour of the bottom of the lake. I am new to boating and am afraid of running into stumps and rocks in the water. I am looking to spend around $350 or so. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to what I should be looking for? Thank you

There are a lot of fish finders out there, generally the upper price on a black and white will give you a better picture than the same price in a color unit.
Next, I worry about hitting rocks and stumps my self. The only thing I can think to tell you, go slow when your near shore. By the time a sonar will tell you a stump is there is when your right over the top of it. The depth finder will tell you when your near the center of the channel, but that’s about it and the depth of the water, for the most part, value as a fish finder is dubious. If there are trees still standing, you can hit the branches without warning. I have hit trees, stumps and branches without harm, but I was going slow, like idle speed or trolling motor. A little common sense and yep, even fear of hurting your boat should slow you down, it does me.
I went with one that would provide, map, depth and GPS. At night it comes in handy getting back to the marina, but you don’t see any logs that may have floated into your path.
I the only suggestion I would make, get the largest display you can afford.
