I fish small mouth bass, whats the difference fishing for large mouth?
I fish for small mouth in New Hampshire, and was informed that there are large mouth in one of my favorite lakes, is there any difference in lures or technique for them?
Yes there is, although you can catch both on some of the same lures and techniques. Small mouth bass tend to be more finicky then large mouths, but they are also a lot more aggressive. Large mouths can be quite finicky to, and either specie can be harder to catch then the other on any given day. Small mouths seem to eat a lot of minnows, crayfish (craw fish, crawdads what ever you want to say), and small frogs. Large mouths tend to eat bigger things like Blue gill, rock bass, bigger shads and shiners, Frogs, and crayfish also. Both Species will eat worms. When going for large mouths try to use something bigger, and maybe louder to. A bigger crank bait, spinner bait, or jig. Use something that looks like a blue gill, rock bass or shad/shiner and try to match the colors as well. X-raps are good for both because they represent small forage minnows. Jigs are great lures for both species because they imitate a crayfish, and they both love crayfish. Worms, salamanders, and frogs work well for both also. Swim baits are extremely versatile for both, i have caught good numbers of large and small mouth on swim baits. Im a small mouth addict and a large mouth fanatic, All the above mentioned are just my observations from fishing both species over the years. I hope it helps, and Good luck Fishin’!
