satellite tracking items?
How many satellites are there floating up in space and how many different objects does NASA track?
I know there are thousands of satelllites and many just float around after they die but how many are there? And I know if the Space Station loses a bolt or a pair of pliers, they can track those too.
Does anybody know how many there are ?
I was just wondering after those 2 satellites collided.
It just seems inconceivable that anything could collide in the vastness of space. Is it that crowded ?
Yah, it’s getting pretty crowded up there.
There are orbits that are more useful than others, or that are more useful for particular needs. Satellite TV and weather satellites usually use geostationary orbits. Some communication satellites intended for high latitudes on the earth use a different kind of geosynchronous orbit that places them above the same place on the earth at the same time each day.
When a Satellite stops functioning, the usual practice is to boost it into a ‘graveyard orbit’, or to deorbit it and let it burn up (that is when they can do anything to it at all). Boosting it costs less, so that’s more common. But that puts it ‘above’ the other traffic, with the danger that it could still drop lower and endanger other satellites.
As I read in the news story, there is no air traffic control up there. There’s nobody watching to make sure they don’t run into each other. Now this is the result. Some people have been warning that there’s so much junk up there now that we’re due to have something like this happen, which unfortunately creates a spray of debris. That debris is dangerous in its own right, and there is a significant danger of a cascade effect. This is not so much a concern in this instance because both objects were in LEO, but if we had something like this happen higher up, it could shot-gun debris down into the LEO region.
Edit: Oops, that last bit is wrong. These two objects orbit *above* a significant number of other birds, and are about twice as high as the ISS. There *is* a cause for concern here.
The U.S. is currently monitoring something like 18,000 individual objects, anything from about 4 inches across or bigger.
BTW, Phil Plait crunched the math, and comes up with a number indicating the energy involved is equal to about 5 tons of TNT.
