Fly Casting
Many of us start out fly fishing on our own. Professional instruction is the best way to learn at the beginning but you can still enjoy the sport and become a proficient caster without it. Here are some tips that could help you improve your casting:
Watch your line. Although some suggest that you should keep your eyes straight ahead, you will improve your fly casting the more you know what is going on with your fly line. Watch your line on the backcast and see what it is doing. Learn to wait for the line to fully extend before beginning your forward cast.
Practice abrupt stops. The way to really load the fly rod is to bring the rod to an abrupt stop on the forward and back casts. On the back cast, stop the rod at the 2:00 position (imagining that straight up is 12:00, like hands on a clock) and let the line straighten. On the forward cast, abruptly stop the rod at about the 10:00 position.
Reduce false casting. Many fly casters seem to think they need to false cast a half a dozen times before the final cast when the fly hits the water. In most situations on rivers and streams, you seldom need to cast more than 40 to 50 feet. It goes without saying that you will have more success catching fish the longer your fly is in the water. Try to catch the fish that are 30 feet away instead of the ones that are 100 feet away.
