Fly Hackle

Fly Hackle

Is there something about wooly buggers that make them such potent fish catchers? Just saying the name is enough to make you chuckle, especially when you say it to someone who isn’t familiar with fly fishing flies and watch their reaction. Most conversations about the best trout fishing flies at one point or another turn to the topic of wooly buggers. Here’s 3 top reasons the fly brings so many trout to the net.

The first reason using a wooly bugger will help you catch more trout (and most other species of fish for that matter) is life-like movement. Two key features of the fly give it realistic movement in the water, making it more irresistible to fish. These are the tail and the palmered hackle over the body. Tied with either marabou or bunny fur, the tail is very soft and undulates up and down as the fly is retrieved. Keeping the tail sparse when tying the fly will create even more action in the water. The palmered hackle over the body will also flex back and forth in the water as the fly moves, creating the impression of moving legs. Trout see this fly as alive and edible.

Secondly, wooly buggers are “buggy”. They aren’t designed to represent any specific trout food item, but they are decent imitators of many aquatic insects such as stoneflies and cranefly larvae. They can also easily be mistaken for minnows, leeches, or even crayfish. This probably accounts for why they are so effective at catching many different species of fish including trout, bass, bluegill, crappie, and many others. Generally tied in hook sizes 10 or larger, they make a big meal for opportunistic trout. It’s like giving the fish the opportunity to eat a double cheeseburger when they’ve been feeding on brussel sprouts all day.

Lastly, because of their size and “bugginess”, wooly buggers make great attractor patterns. A creative angler can take advantage of this even if trout aren’t taking the fly. So you might be asking, “How can I catch trout with a fly the fish aren’t hitting?” The answer is by using a wooly bugger to attract fish to take another fly.

Simply attach a dropper such as a small pheasant tail, copper john, or scud using 18-24″ of tippet to the bend of the wooly bugger’s hook. The size and movement of the wooly bugger will still entice trout to take a closer look, but even if they don’t strike there is a good chance they’ll take the dropper.

Keep reading to discover how to enhance your wooly bugger and fly fishing skills even further.
