Fishing reel for snapper and grouper?
The reel is a Penn # 155 it has a 3:1 gear ratio and can hold 30lbs line at 250 yards. Is this reel strong enough for some snapper or even some grouper?
Ahhh… the little Monofil. It’s a good little reel, but I think it might be a little light for bottom fishing. Thirty pound is too heavy for it, its made for lines between fifteen and twenty. The drag is a little weak for heavy bottom fish. With an aluminum spool, it would be a great reel for most surface fish. They’re quite popular here on the West Coast for halibut, calico and sand bass, barracuda, bonita, it would even make a great striper or catfish reel.
If its in mint condition, it might be a better idea to keep it as a collector’s item and go with a Penn Five Hundred instead… Jigmaster.
