How do i use a curly tail grub fishing lure?
I go fishing quite often and throughout the winter did very extensive research on bass and lures. I went fishing once with a new set of lures then injured my arm so i havent fished in many weeks. I have a large supply of curly-tail grubs and always thought they were crap. I am now realizing they are excellent lures and i want to utilize them best as possible. I just dont know how to retreive them. Steady retreive? Twitching retreive? Stop ‘N Go retrieve? Slow retrieve? Let me know.
All of the above. A grub is one of those baits that you can’t fish “wrong”. Sometimes a twitching retrieve is best, sometimes a steady retrieve, and so on.
Normally, I rig mine up on a normal jig head and use a stop and go style retrieve. Fish seem to almost always hit while the bait is falling through the water.
You can also throw them weightless if you have a smaller spinning setup, like an ultra lite setup. If fish are holding shallow, this is many times the most productive.
Just to add a bit, you are right, curly tailed grubs are excellent tried and true lures. They will catch damn near anything that swims. I’ve caught Bass, Walleye, Bluegill, Crappie, Gar, and even Catfish on them.
