Wild baby rabbits are more fragile than domesticated rabbits. They are more prone to stress especially with human connections. They have a low rate of survival when you keep them as pets. Wild baby rabbits are the mighty ancestors of domestic rabbits. They are the powerful one compared to domesticated rabbits. There are many kinds of wild rabbits; one of them is the cottontail rabbit.
Wild baby rabbits are typically born under the bushes that are covered with twigs and grass. Mother rabbit makes her nest like this to protect herself as well as her litters against any lurking predators such as wild cats, alligators, snakes and even lions and tigers. Wild baby rabbits are usually left alone after mother rabbit gave birth. She leaves them after the midnight of her first feeding thus making them more unsafe from predators.
If by any chance you happen to see any wild baby rabbits in your place or in the woods, just leave it there where you found them because chance are mother rabbit is just around. Just make sure you covered it more grass and twigs to make it even safer.
Here are some precautions you must understand about wild baby rabbits:
1. Wild baby rabbits do not bite. They just might try to kick you using their hind legs. If you pick them up and handle them, they might try to relax a bit and when they finally feel that you as well relax from your grip, they will quickly jump off your hand. That’s one way for them to escape.
2. If you found wild litters on the woods or in your backyard, check if mother rabbit’s around or if she is dead. If you are positive she’s dead and the wild litters are alone then you must pick them up with towel to keep them warm and call any wildlife center near you to pick the rabbits.
3. Check if the wild litters if they are hurt or not. If the litters are hurt, call your vet or any rehabilitator as soon as possible.
4. If the wild litters are kind of edgy, to do forced them to be examined by your hands, because this will only add up to their stress.
5. Wrap the wild baby rabbits with towel and keep them in a warm incubator such as a clean nest box lined with hay and heap of towels to keep them warm.
6. Check if wild litters are dehydrated. If so, feed them immediately with pedialyte.
Milk replacer:
1 can goat’s milk (no cow’s milk), karo syrup, i egg yolk and 3 tablespoon of cream.
Combine all ingredients.
Wild baby rabbits are prone to infections. They are also host of infections and certain diseases such as ringworm or fungal skin infection which can be transmitted to humans as well as to your other housepets.
