How to trim the mandibular beak on a budgie?
Last night I took in young budgie whose mandibular beak (the lower beak) has grown over it’s maxillary (the upper, hook shaped beak). I’ve been watching it, and it seems to be able to eat and drink still, albeit with some difficulty.
If all you have to say is see a vet, please don’t bother. I’d love to see a vet, but there’s no avian vet in the area; the closest is five-six hours drive and that’s a trip I simply can’t make right now. I’m still going to call around the local clinics, and see if there’s anyone who’d be confident in doing it, but they’ve never been comfortable in dealing with my or any other exotic pets before now, so I don’t expect a lot of success.
In any case, I’m looking for some tips as to how to best go about trimming the beak myself. It may need to be done regularly anyway, although my hope is that once it’s trimmed, she’ll be able to look after it herself with enough gnawable toys and treats.
Anyone can cut n paste answers but I am guessing you need to hear from someone with experience of this issue and thats me.
Your chick has this problem due to food becoming trapped in the upper mandible while the chick was young and still in the nestbox. Its one of the things we check for when we check nestboxes and chicks twice daily. I open the beaks and remove any trapped food in the top beak with either a little toothpick but more often I use a feather quill.
Its when these checks arent done to assist the chicks that the food stays in the top beak and rots and build up heat from the rotting food. It doesnt take much. Then because of this the top beak stops growing as it should and over some days the bottom beak end up outside of the top beak. Once this occurs its how it will be.
Now I do know what you mean about it needing to be done regularly, and I must advise that even when you can trim the beak the bottom beak will continue to grow outside of the top beak its whole life…..so you most likely will have to trim every two weeks.
Dont be too worried about racing off to the vet for this, as its pretty easy to do.
The overgrowth of the bottom beak generally show the line of growth virtually giving you a line to cut. Using sharp scissors or finger nail clippers it can be done quickly with little or no fuss.
But catch up the bird and do it every two weeks.
Dont expect it to correct itself as it wont no matter how many chew toys it has.
But you can easily trim it yourself without racing to the vet.
