Inch Saltwater
Saltwater fish in 40 gallons?
I am getting a saltwater aquarium (switching from freshwater). I have read online you can have 2 inches for every gallon of water… Is that right? I have a 40 gallon tank so that would mean i could have 80 inches of fish. I am getting coral and invertebrates (obviously) too.
You can’t use the inch per gallon rule as if you really think about it, can you fit one 80 inch fish in your tank? Stocking your tank depends on many factors as how your rockwork is laid out, shape of your tank (is it a high tank or a long narrow tank?), type of species you intend on keeping (is it a fish that prefers rock like the Royal Gramma or Blenny or are they open water fish like tanks or butterfly’s) If you must use an inch per gallon rule, I would not have more than 20 inches of fish (final adult size) in a 40 gallon tank. One caveat is that no fish should be greater than 6 inches (adult size). For more research and info check out www.reefcentral.com for some advice. HTH.
