Underpaid Chinese workers go on strike against Japan’s Honda Motors. Is this a good idea?
The Japanese automobile giant was lured by Chinese authoritarian government to open manufacturing bases in China to take advantage of low cost labor. The pay of Chinese workers employed with Honda is far far better than what Chinese manufacturers pay.
Recently workers in a Honda transmission factory have resorted to strike and are demanding huge increase in their pay. Obviously these moves are being orchestrated by the Communist Party of China as all labor unions in China are affiliated with CCP.

Shouldn’t the Chinese government start with the Chinese manufacturers who pay a pittance to the workers and have no regard for any of the labor laws? Why target the foreign multinationals who offer a far better package and working environment than their Chinese counterparts?

Labour strikers and disputes happen all around the world, at the moment British airways workers are also too also striking for better wages. I think it is unfair that foreign companies should be force to give better wages than their Chinese counterparts while they are following China’s labour laws like other Chinese companies. I think this reporting is one sided part of the blame others cultures, and nothing says it better than to blame a foreigner. If such horrible working conditions where that bad there would be hundreds of people lined up to give evidence in class action law suits in Chinese courts, but as of let their is not.
I know a friend who works 6 days a week, 12 hours for a Chinese run company. Its a case of she has to put up with it or be out of work. I wonder that would happen, as China relies on cheap labour for its economic growth when foreign companies say ok we can get this build cheaper in Thailand Vietnam, India and have better copyright laws.
The recent strikes and suicides is just a small insight of the current situation that swamps all of China’s mass production factories. It is up to the Chinese government to fairly introduce labour laws that are used by all of China’s factories. Setting regulations on shifts, breaks, holidays and minimum pay limits. But China economy is based on negotiation capitalism from bottom to top and is is very unlikely that the Chinese government would enforce regulations that would affect its economical growth at the moment.
