How do you melt metal, and what would you need to pound it out?
I have always been interested in Japanese swords, and I have decided to craft my own sword. I would like to know how to melt the metal, how to lay it out in the shape, and how to pound out/cool it. I would also like to know what equipment would be needed: hammer, gloves….
first katanas are forged not cast. You need a forge, if you want traditional then charcoal and a good supply of constant air flow, otherwise use a gas forge. You need several blacksmith or swordsmith hammers, tongs, an anvil to forge on and a quenching tank. Metal temps come in colors, straw yellow, cherry red, and white hot. Straw yellow is used mainly for heat treating, forgeing is done at cherry red and welding is at the white hot. Katanas are folded blades. The metal is heated to cherry red, flux is applied and the metal is folded over and hammered out. there is a reason that a real katana is highly prized. it takes a LOT of work, time and SKILL to get it right. Find a blacksmith and ask them for lessons, or better yet see if they know a local swordsmith.
