Leader Mono
Fluorocarbon/Mono Leader?
I currently have 12 lb braid on my spinning reel. I will be going for largemouth when spring time hits. Is it necessary to use leaders when going for largemouth? I’ve heard that they’re aggresive and it shouldn’t matter if they see the line or not.
It depends a lot on water clarity. If the water is crystal clear (8+ ft. visibility), you may want to consider spooling your reel with mono or fluoro all the way up.
I rarely will use a mono or fluoro leader on braid. It is just another thing that can go wrong with the extra knot and I’ve found in most conditions it isn’t needed.
If I’m fishing crystal clear water it normally is deeper finesse style (drop shot or jig worm), and I’ll go down to 6 or 8 lb. mono. If you’re in heavy cover or flip’n, you can go braid all the way no matter what the water clarity is. Those are all reaction bites and they won’t care about your line.
For most lakes I’ll use 30 lb. power pro tied directly for jigs, spinnerbaits, etc. If I’m flip’n real heavy cover (milfoil around here), I’ll go with 50 lb. power pro.
