Question(s) about surf Snook fishing?

I am going surf fishing tomorrow for Snook and I have a few questions about it.

1. Snook could be considered a “saltwater Bass”. They have the same reputation for taking Topwater, Spoons, Cranks, saltwater Spinnerbait’s, Etc. They will readily take lures, but you CAN use bait as well with success. A simple Jig/Shrimp or Jig/Mudminnow or Finger Mullet being a simple but productive rig.

However, If I were you, I would use lures- When Surf Fishing for Snook you need to stay VERY mobile- make 25 casts and move on. I would also seek a Jetty situation or any Inlet in the region. You increase your odds of hooking up in and around Inlet’s, (due to baitfish migration and tidal influences washing forage in and out of the ocean).

2. You diminish your odds (60%) of hooking ANY Gamefish when using heavy wire leaders Inshore fishing. Florida guides and Tournament fishermen use 17-30LB Fluorocarbon leaders. Snook tend to live in clear-water environs making Fluro an important aspect of fishing for them. A spool of 20LB Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon, (green tint) is inexpensive and works well as leader material.

3. EARLY- Snook prefer low-light for feeding and will tuck deep under Mangrove’s during the bright part of the day. Another good option is fishing for them during the evening or at night, (check your other Q for further info).
