Line East
can anyone one name what or who exactly distinguished the mississippi river as the line between east and west?
my friends and i started talking about basketball, and got into a debate on whether or not memphis and new Orleans belonged in the western conference. i remember learning about it in elementary school. its a damn line or something, but it has a name. Please help!
i know its not an official line, but i remember there was a name for the general distinction between east and west, and the mississippi river divided the two.
No, there isn’t a damn line dividing the Eastern USA from the Western USA. Perhaps you are thinking of the Mason-Dixon line that some view as the line separating the Northern USA from the Southern USA (in the original colonies, anyway).
It is even less rigorous when considering the conferences of professional sports leagues. Eastern and Western conferences are divided to put an even number of teams in each. Plot all the teams in the NBA on a map, and draw a line where half of them are East of the line and half of them are West.
Then you have to throw in the established rivalries that can’t be split up. Detroit and Chicago have to be in the same conference, for instance.
For the Mississippi River question, the Mississippi was the western border of the United States until the Louisiana Purchase. It is the only natural division near the center of the continent.
