what is a long fly casting distance?
ive started flyfishing and am working on my cast but in a no wing condition i can only get my line maybe 30 feet out from the tip of the pole….is this a good distance about how far can you cast and how long have you been fishing?
You can catch a lot of fish in medium and small streams and rivers with a 30 foot cast, but you should continue working on your casting skills to try to pick up another 10 to 20 feet.
I would suggest that you pay a lot of attention to your back cast, as it is as important as your forward cast. Try to find a large area of grass where you can watch your back cast and wait until it is fully unfurled before making the forward cast. This way you will get the feel of a fully loaded rod. 30 to 45 foot casts most fresh water situations you will encounter.
If you are going to fish saltwater or large lakes or rivers, you will need to be able to cast 60 to 80 feet. This entails learning a technique called the double haul. There are a number of books on casting techniques. A particularly good author is Lefty Kreh.
