Cell phones have grown in popularity to the point where many people no longer own landlines. They allow us to communicate when we’re traveling, reach anyone at anytime, call for directions, call for help, and any number of things. While they help to streamline our lives, the process of developing cell phones is much more varied and interesting that many people realize. Here is a brief history of the cell phone.

Like many inventions, the cell phone has humble roots. As far back as 1843, experiments were being performed to determine whether space could conduct electricity. Scientist Michael Faraday’s experiments would provide much of the foundation of cell phone development in the next century. Dr. Mahlon Loomis furthered the cause during the next decades by sending telegraphic messages. He was the first person to communicate wirelessly. He was able to figure out how to use the earth’s atmosphere to send and receive messages. From there, we were able to communicate via walkie-talkie and two way radio. Cell phones were only a step away.

With this important groundwork came more advances. In 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper invented the first handset and made the very first cell phone call. Larger scale testing of this new technology began as early as 1977. Of course, the first cell phones resemble nothing of our tiny, sleek phones of today. They were big and clunky, but without them, we wouldn’t have our pocket-sized phones today. The phones were first mass marketed to the public in 1984, but it took a few more years before the technology was to be used in a widespread way.

There are 140 million cell phones in the United States alone. Being able to make and receive calls from anywhere, take pictures, send files, and more is possible with cell phones. You can even search a phone number and find out more about a cell number, which was never possible before. Technology keeps on advancing, and cell phone users are the lucky beneficiaries of this progress.
