How can I get my new cat to come out of hiding?
I got a 3-year-old male Siamese cat almost a month ago. He has been hiding in the couch during the day since he arrived. His previous owners, who got him as a kitten, gave him up because he was afraid of their new dogs; they claim he hid in a closet when the dogs were around. They said they have tried to get him used to the dogs for a year. He is afraid to go outside and ride in the car. So, he has had a tough time, poor thing. They did say that he is sweet and likes to be petted and groomed. He comes out to eat and use the litter box after I go to bed at night. He doesn’t like wet food, treats or people food; he only likes his crunchies, so I am at a loss for ways to lure him out so that he can find out he has a loving new home with no dogs. I have been contemplating taking his food away at night and putting it out during the day so we might have a chance to meet. But, I am concerned that this will only stress him out more. I’d appreciate any ideas! Thanks!
Cats are stubborn creatures by nature.
I know that month seems like a long time, but you may need to give him some more. If he was being terrorized by dogs for an entire year, it will take a long time for him to trust another household.
Have you taken him to the vet? Hiding can be a sign of illness or injury as well.
I would keep the same routine, as you don’t want to upset his habits. Forcing him out of hiding will only make things worse.
Is there a quiet room he can have all to himself? Maybe you can put him in there and let him get to know you.
