Made Wood
I have a wall made from field stone on the wall I want to put up a wood shelf on it. How do I do this?
I want to place a mantle over my fireplace and need to know how to go about this. The whole wall around the fireplace is of field stone. The mantle will be made of wood.
The first question is the construction of your wall. If the wall is completely stone or masonry, or if it is a stone facade on another type of wall such as wood studs. Assuming that you don’t have and don’t want to buy an expensive hammer drill (the cheap ones aren’t worth buying), I would look for a diamond tipped Lennox hole saw used for tile and masonry applications. Get one for the size of expanding masonry anchors that you might need. Drill into the stone where needed or with a test hole in a hidden place to determine the thickness of the stone. If it is a thin facade, you can use ordinary wall anchors on the wall behind the facade, if it is thick, or solid, use a masonry anchor.
Most Importantly … Consult a professional in the fireplace business or local building inspector to determine the building codes / safety requirements of putting a combustible shelf near a fireplace. If it can’t be done safely, don’t do it.
