Why has my favorite fishing hole stopped producing fish?
I used to catch everyday off the dock at my favorite fishing spot. Since its close to winter they have taken the dock out before the water freezes and now I cant catch a thing. Its like the fish were only there because of the dock. However, the best day of fishing the whole season was 1 day after the dock was removed. After that I havent got a single bite. They are small 2-5lb lake trout. Is it because its getting much colder? Do I just need to change my technique? (mepps aglia #3 has been the magic lure up until now) I was thinking of trying still fishing since they arent very active but I dont know how to still fish for lake trout. Just walleye and rainbows… Any suggestions?
Well, the thing you haven’t told us is if you have ever fished this spot through an entire year. If you’ve been fishing this spot year after year and this is the first year you’ve experienced this slow period, then something in the lake or fish population has changed or is in the process of changing, and who knows — these changes may be permanent.
If, on the other hand, you’ve been fishing this spot since last March or so and now you’re experiencing this lack of catch for the first time, well, that’s a different situation. I suspect this is the case — you’re seeing your favorite fishing hole undergoing a seasonal change. The first thing you should do is make a note of it, learn from it. I think all anglers should keep a log that records dates, times, fishing conditions, catch, and other observations.
In any case, all waterways undergo seasonal changes. Water temperature, flow, clarity, availability of forage, vegetation, structure — all these can change with the seasons, and fish will often relocate or change their patterns based on these factors. I know places where the fishing is unbeatable in spring but crappy in summer. I know places where you can catch bass and perch in the summer but only catch trout when it gets cooler.
Yes, I think the fish you were catching were at the dock only because the dock was there. With the dock gone, the habitat changes — shade and algae attracts little bugs, which attract baitfish, which attracts bigger fish. With the dock gone, it’s totally different habitat. This is all just guesswork, but maybe the day after the dock removal was good for fishing because it dredged up a bunch of forage and left a lot of local creatures and crawlies stranded in the sunlight without cover.
As far as changing techniques, there is only one answer to that question: YES. Whenever you stop catching fish, the worse thing you can do is keep slamming the water with techniques or lures that used to be productive but aren’t anymore. Change lures, change locations, fish at different times of the day, ask around and see what other anglers say, find a new favorite hole that will be productive until next spring, maybe.
You indicate that you’re fishing almost every day — you’re very fortunate to be able to do so. This gives you time and flexibility to move around and try different things. Sometimes having a very productive fishing hole can almost be a bad thing because it allows you to get in a rut and not explore new places and ways to fish. If the fish aren’t coming to you, you’ll just have to go to the fish.
