Where would I be able to find pike fry?
Im looking to get some baby pike for my native tank to see their interaction w/ others as they grow. I know they grow fast, so my target range is an inch maybe two. The water Id be trying to get them out of is a small river that has been dammed off. There is a few fallen pieces of structure in the water, and there is over hanging brush. I know there is a ton of pike here because ive been catching them like crazy this past week. I would be using a metal minnow trap to catch them with the hopes I pull it up at the right time. What types of bait should I put in the trap to attract them in, then also where should I place it? at the beginning of the river, there is a small stream that is flat and VERY shallow, this is what feeds the river.
Where do you live? In many parts of the US and Canada placing such a net or trap is not legal. Especially to catch gamefish. In addition, in many of those places a Pike must be a minimum size before it can be creeled, so keeping a fry would violate those restrictions.
Your best bet would be to contact your local government fisheries office to find out where you could buy a few small ones. They are a neat fish in the right size aquarium.
