Neck Flap
One of my hens appears to have lost her balance, and cranes her neck upwards in circular movements. Any ideas?
My children were shown how to hold the chickens upside down by their legs, and I wonder if they’ve damaged her neck? When she tries to fly she flaps her wings and unbalances herself. It’s really sad to see her this way, is she in pain?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
There are several diseases that chickens can get that would give the symptoms that you have reported.
Is her wings trimmed? It sounds like that the chickens have vertigo. That is a usually a secondary problem after they already have another disease. The way she was carried didn’t have anything to do with it. It sounds like she has salmonella (paratyphoid) or PMV (paramoxavirus). For the sake of your chicken put her out of her misery. If one of your chickens is sick then the probability of them all being sick is high. What kind of feed have you been giving them? Does the feed bag have water stains on it? Do you have mice that can get into the feed? Mouse/rat urine will cause salmonella.
If there is a state agriculture office near you you could call them or a farm supply store. I wouldn’t waste a vet’s fee for one chicken. Some state universities will test a bird to see what is the problem. They do it here in KY for free. They will recommend a plan of treatment for you also. I would be concerned more for the four that don’t show any problems yet…………….
