Feather Fans
Feather fans emerged around three thousand years ago during Shang Zhou dynasty in China. It is also said that some high society ladies during sixteen and seventeen century used feather fans to flaunt their wealth as these fans were regarded as status symbol. These fans were made from cranes, kingfishers, eagles, magpies and peacocks feathers. During the beginning of eighteen century they were used for decorative purposes. Also at that time when emperor received homage from his ministers he flanked himself with 156 peacock feather fans and in return sent them white feather fans to show his favor. But nowadays Chinese feather fans are made up of goose or peacock feathers and are embellished with gold or silver thread which makes them looks beautiful.
Now days there are beautiful feather fans available in myriad of styles and are embellished with stones, leathers, silver or gold thread etc. Apart from that beaded feather fans are available which not only give traditional look but are adorned with blue or yellow beads and are accoladed with clear quartz crystal or amethyst crystals. Also goose or pheasant feathers tied with decorative leather handle with silver moonstones and beads work on it adds grace to the handle. These fans are not only charming but are very easy to make at home and by following below steps we can make beautiful Native American feather fans.
- First of all take some feathers it would be preferred if you use eagle feathers as these feathers would be easily available in art and craft stores. The number of feather you take depends on size of fan you want to make so you can take feathers in odd number around five to seven or more.
- If feathers are not straight you can straighten them with lighted light bulb. You may gently run the feathers over the lighted bulb as heat coming out of light bulb will help in straightening the feathers but do take care and don’t lay much pressure on quill as it may damage the feathers.
- Trim the feathers with a pair of scissors and give them a gentle curve tip shape very much like a butter knife.
- Lay out feathers such that they are slightly overlapped until center feather is positioned properly.
- To make a handle you can either take a wooden stick or make handle from cardboard. If you are thinking of wooden stick handle then take care to smoothen its surface with sandpaper and you can shape it according to your need.
- Cut the top of the wooden stick and cut it in small sticks depending on the number of feathers you are using and on each small stick glue the feathers.
- Take two chopsticks and now gather the fan together in between the chopsticks and tape the end of chopsticks so that opens in a semicircle.
These beautiful fans made of feathers can be used in dance parties, can be complimented with your dress, hanged on wall or can be used for decorative purposes. If you are making them at home then with little bit of creativity you can make gorgeous feather fans and embellish them with stones, crystals, velvet paper etc. but take care not to clutter them with too much decoration and spoil them.
