how do i know that i threw a rod in my 1995 Ford Explorer?
I was driving on the freeway the car was driving just fine. All of a sudden we heard a loud knocking noise and the car died. We pulled over checked the oil, there was still oil in the car. It started back up i drove it home. For the 3 days it drove but with the loud noise still until it died again. We had a mechanic look at it, he put a battery pack on it and it still didnt start. He said the battery tested good still. Now when we try to start it, it wont kick over. What does this prob. mean ? A rod?
It means you continued to drive it when there was a problem. Cars aren’t like the human body. There’s no immune system. They don’t heal themselves. When there’s a problem, you have to get it fixed. If you threw a rod and it didn’t punch through your engine, you’re lucky, but your cylinder is probably beat to hell. It’s possible that the remaining piece of the rod managed to get itself wedged up against the piston that’s not where it belongs anymore or it wore a groove into your cylinder wall and lodged itself there. Your engine’s probably toast now. Next time your engine makes a loud noise and stops itself, it’s trying to tell you something. Listen to it next time. You’re not doing yourself any favors by driving it after it’s already broken.
