If you are collecting vintage spinning reels, you might want reels that are in excellent condition. You want your collection to have almost perfect physical condition and appearance and efficient mechanical condition. However, it is very rare to find vintage spinning reels in the most excellent conditions. So if you want your collection to grow, it is better to settle with vintage spinning reels in very good conditions. Here are the characteristics of a very good reel.
The reel is clean. All parts and surfaces must be free from smudges and dirt. Knobs, screws are still tight, although some of them have already been dismantled and disassembled. Scratches are very few and light, not very noticeable. Plate wears and foot have minor imperfections. Edges of rubber may not be so sharp. Mechanical condition is okay, everything still works well. However, you may notice a slight drag in the spool. Click is slightly worn.
If you are also interested in collecting spinning vintage reels in good condition (although most collectors do not bother with reels that are in less than very good conditions), here are some things you should look for.
Everything still works, but not efficiently. Some parts, like click or brake, may not be working. Level wind and handle bent are stuck. There are chips, slight rusting, and minor dents. Heavily filed foot to fit in the rod. Screw heads are distorted and you can see signs of dismantling. Make sure to check for vintage reel parts
Before buying something, you should know the grade of the item you are buying to know if you are paying the right amount. Consider rarity and overall conditions of the reel to know whether it is a collectible or not.
