What is the red flake around Mimi my ratties eye?
this is more than likely a substance called porphyrin (google it..). porphyrin looks like blood, but it’s not. it’s just red-coloured “tears” that you will see around the eyes and nose of ratties. it’s a result of a condition all ratties have called mycoplasmosis.
a LITTLE bit of porphyrin staining occassionally is okay (like when they first wake up in the morning), but if you start noticing a LOT of it around the eyes and/or nose, most of the time, then that means the rat is sick, stressed, or in pain..and may need a vet trip for antibiotics, etc.
