Popular culture might be filled with tales about fathers but it’s the mothers who occupy the high honour when it comes to depiction of parents. Agreed that fathers might not possess an equivalent of Mother India, they don’t too badly when it comes to screen lives. One just needs to look around a bit and let it be this Father’s Day to undertake the search.
Mention ‘dad’ on screen and the image of Aamir Khan from Akele Hum Akele Tum with his screen kid comes in front of your eyes and suddenly your father’s scolding doesn’t seem to hurt anymore.
Aamir Khan’s version of Dusting Hoffmanesque father trying to find his bearings remains one of the most endearing performances of the actor’s career. Looking back one can see that while today’s heroes have equally smart and befitting fathers on screen this wasn’t always the case. As far as Hindi cinema goes this was left to the likes of Balraj Sahani, Om Prakash, Nasir Hussain or many familiar yet don’t recall the name faces.
Even then Om Prakash playing Dev Anand’s dad in Tere Ghar Ke Saamne or Balraj Sahani’s rehabilitated dacoit surrogate father in Paraya Dhan and Waqt make for interesting viewing.
One of the stellar performances of the 1960’s would have to be Kishore Kumar’s I-will-do-anything-for-my-son kind of dad to Shashi Kapoor in Pyar Kiye Ja. The funnyman dresses up as his own father to save his friend Shashi Kapoor, who takes on Kishore Kuamr’s identity, from a hapless Om Prakash, the father of his girlfriend.
The 1970’s saw one of the most unlikely actors to give not one but two soulful presentation of as screen father. Comedian Mehmood played the father with a heart of gold to his real children Ginny Aur Johny and Kuwara Baap.
Remake of the English film Paper Moon, Ginny Aur Johnny is the story of a thief who is taking care of a pint size terror who might just be as good as the job as him. Kuwara Baap portrayed Mehmood as a down on his luck riskshaw driver who finds an abandoned baby on the streets and brings him up as his own.
His son who is a real life polio victim played the role that Mehmood lovingly created for his son. The fascinating thing about Mehmood’s father in both the films is that he can’t see his children suffer and would do anything for them.
Hollywood is full with films that have portrayed the father in different moods. Remember Marlon Brando’s Godfather–the most powerful man in America and yet can’t look his youngest Michael in the eye for he knows his son doesn’t approve of this ways.
Or Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful; a father who plays the buffoon to ensure his son’s mind isn’t scarred by what the young one witnesses in a concentration camp.
One of the best father’s on screen was portrayed by Steve Martin in the Father of the Bride. Then there have been father’s who will go to any lengths to save their children. Johnny Depp in The Nick of Time will even kill a senator in order to save his daughter or John Q’s Denzel Washington who would take an entire hospital hostage for his son’s life, even Jean Claude Van Damme in Sudden Death who will knock out the goal keeper of an ice hockey team and take his place to ensure his son’s safety.
The advent of the 2000’s saw Amitabh Bachchan play daddy to just about every superstar in B-Town. After playing father to his own son in a couple of films, Pa will see Abhishek playing his father’s on screen dad.
So enough of reel fathers but in real life too fathers are an integral part of our lives. That’s why Fathers day and Mothers day are celebrated separately. Definitely Fathers day calls for celebration because whatever we all are today due to a collective effort of our parents.
