I am salmon fishing in michigan what size rod or reel do i need?
I am going salmon fishing for the first time. I need some help. I am reasking this question cauntld please message me
Don’t you just love it when someone who obviously knows nothing about the subject offers their “expert” opinion??
You didn’t mention what method of fishing you were intending to use, so I’ll assume that you are casting from shore or a jetty or on a stream, rather than downrigger trolling.
For stream or river fishing you’ll need an 8′ to 9′ medium action salmon spinning rod, rated for up to 20# line. Your matching reel should be of good quality (at least 3 ball bearings) and capable of spooling at least 200 yards of 20# line. I prefer spooling with about 15# line, as casting is easier and distance better, particularly if you’re using lighter baits. And buy good quality line, not “bargain basement special”. It’s the only thing between you and that record salmon!!
Buy the best equipment you can afford. Cheap gear is a waste, as a good size chinook will simply tear up cheap tackle, so you will only have wasted your money. I’ve seen it happen time and again with new salmon anglers.
