Lure Fishing For Salmon – What Works And When To Use Them
Lure fishing is one of the most popular techniques to quickly cover large areas of water to determine if there is any fish around. Anglers believe that lures are effective for chinook (king), silver (coho) and pink salmon. They also work well for rainbows, char and grayling breeds as well.
Mepps Aglia Spinner – One of the Favorites
It has been seen that Mepps Aglia spinners have been the most effective lure used in fishing. Most of the time anglers like to use the fluorescent orange color lure. Apart from that fluorescent yellow and fluorescent pink are also some of the good options to target the kings. If you are fishing with a single hook, you can change out the trebble hooks for a single. Even you may consider the new Mepps “LongCast” spinners that are available with either single or trebble hooks.
Pixie Spoons – A Traditional Salmon Lure
Spoons work well for Salmon kings that too of silvers and pink colors. Pixie brand spoons are the most popular ones that come with fluorescent orange, green, yellow or pink colors. These plastic lures come in 1/2 or 3/8 ounce sizes. Pixies come with single or trebble hooks making it easy for compliance with whatever hooks restrictions the river may have.
Spinner & Spoon Techniques
It is a natural tendency of several anglers, when fishing with spinners or spoons, to cast directly across the river and then end up retrieving the lure upstream. But the most effective technique is to cast the lure upriver as much as possible. And then slowly bring the lure right down toward the face of all the upriver facing fish. This technique is genuinely effective for catching king salmon. When the kings see the lure coming their way, they believe their space is being invaded and readily strike the lure to show who is the boss!
Basic Dive Lures & Technique
It is advisable to cast the lure as far as you can angle upstream at a 45 degree angle and determine the appropriate retrieval speed. Generally the correct retrieval speed varies based on the current of the river and its depth. You should keep the lure in such a way so that it just lightly touches the bottom. This helps you to know when you have a bite as because the line is tight and the lure is moving creating an obvious take. It is wise to take plenty of replacement hooks and associated hardware for your lures on a salmon king fishing trip.
