Salmon Walleye
What if you had to fish walleye lakes that had spotty populations of walleyes or an extremely high forage base? What if these lakes had virtually every type of pattern known to man as a viable option? You would be working through tree tops, over deep brush, along shallow shore lines, over shallow flats, deep flats, suspended patterns, super high suspended patterns, creek channel junctions, creek channel bends, rocky points, roadbeds, mid lake humps, weeds, mucky bays. The list goes on. Got a headache yet?
Now, imagine the damage you could do on a decent lake after becoming intimate with the walleyes in the tough fisheries? Imagine the diversity in equipment you would have. Not to mention you would be extremely efficient using all the presentations – chances are good you will have created a few new spins on old presentations to meet the challenging conditions faced. While you’re at it go after them on ice in a forage packed lake and see what you learn.
That’s exactly what I spent doing for the last 5 years of my fishing career. Going to oddball places, being attracted to lakes with very poor fishing reports – particularly in August or February. Yes, chasing down the toughest conditions and the toughest lakes, I suffered some serious “walleye trudgies” as I like to call that beaten and skunked feeling all walleye fishermen have felt. Would you believe that one day I actually passed floating walleye after floating walleye as they were dying from oxygen stress in the lake. It doesn’t get any tougher! However, things changed when I changed between the ears and my success skyrocketed. Skunks are a thing of the past.
Since then I’ve had guides warn me that I better be prepared to change up to bass or crappies, because the walleyes are in a funk. The following day I’ve showed guides what I did to get a quick limit of walleyes and the crazy places I found them. One thing you notice with bad fishing reports and tough conditions is the walleye dynamics in that lake at that time of year are vastly different from anything you’ve ever read before.
When the bite is tough, change your way of thinking and forget everything you think you know about walleyes. Just a few funny examples of this would be: I’ve found them 1 foot down in the middle of the lake, I’ve hit their heads on the ice when setting the hook, and I’ve put a lot of fish in the boat using extremely large baits running at extremely fast speeds. Leadcore has been very instrumental in how I break down a thick, nasty, mid-summer weed bed or tree tops and brush. Getting creative you can sink some pretty deadly presentations into heavy cover and keep the bait working for you. Not to mention I use leadcore for many classic open water patterns and finesse cranking programs. It’s an extremely valuable tool full of diversity when it comes to delivery systems.
