Set Three
Many of today’s three-point basketball shots are executed from the dangling-in-the-air jump-shot position. Does this air-borne position, which requires shooting precision, get the ball over the opposing guards more easily? Or is it done faster and more powerfully than the stationary set shot?
In any case, the body executed stationary set shot has its advantages over the jump shot. Mainly it yields dependable scores from behind the three-point marker. Here are the basics for sinking most of them.
Hands (spread the fingers wide; keep the elbows to your sides). Choose the one or two-hand shooting option you are most comfortable with. The single hand shot is the most common one done today (the second hand holds or balances the ball). This technique puts a gentle wrist-action into an arched shot. Although the two-handed shot is not used much anymore, it can direct the ball to the center of the hoop or to a spot on the backboard accurately.
Feet (balance yourself). Place your feet apart, one slightly in front of the other, so you can lean or move in any direction, including backwards.
Knees (bend them). Bend your knees slightly during the early-shooting positioning to bring the power of your legs, ankles, and body into the final shot. This maneuver saves arm and hand energy. It also adds body-synchronized control to the shot.
Aiming (focus on the target). Look at the spot you want the ball to go to, e.g., to the center of the hoop or to a specific spot on the backboard.
Shooting (arch it). With your hand, arm, legs, and body working together, arch the ball toward the spot aimed for.
Wrist action (follow through). Bend your shooting hand downward right after the ball leaves it. This movement comes naturally with practice. It feels like dunking the ball from a distance.
Feet, knees, and legs (step forward). For the longer shot still, i.e., the one further behind the three-point marker, step forward into it while coming up from the bent-knee position. This extra movement adds impetus and body-controlled accuracy to the shot.
Backboard (use it, except for the side shots). A long-lost art to the long shot is using the backboard. Yes, that is correct; use it for the long shot. Instead of trying to net-swish your shot through the hoop, learn to bank it from the various backboard spots just above it.
The backboard dampens the force of the ball, which allows it to bounce downward into the basket. For that reason, a slightly off-target banked shot tends to go into the basket easier and more often than an off-center swish-aimed one. Additionally, a shooter can add ball-spin to the banked shot, and control its initial impetus. The shooter just needs to know which spots to bank from accordingly. Furthermore, a good way for a player to increase his or her free-throw percentage is to use the backboard.
Synchronization (all together now, quickly). With practice, these body synchronized set shots can be executed quickly and accurately. Typically, these shots come about through the team’s passing of the ball. For example, the further into the backcourt the ball is caught by a player, the more difficult it is for an opposing player to guard a shot from there without leaving the defensive zone near the basket open. Thus, shots open up from this distance all the time.
In conclusion, to increase your three-point scoring ability, learn to use the banked body-controlled stationary set shot. You will be glad you did. I know, having shot quite a few of them from a neighbor’s driveway when I was a kid. For more information on these shooting styles, see these sites.
