what type of rod and reel is used for surf casting?
i have a shimano trolling rod and reel for fishing walleye.Up to 40 pound test on reel,8ft rod Can this type of set up be used also for surf casting?
Well rather obviously a surf casting rod and reel are used for surf casting. You can also use a bait casting reel, but that still won’t have the range of a surf casting reel. If you’re willing to sacrifice some range you can use your 8 ft rod for surf casting, but your reel just won’t do. You can’t pay the line out fast enough with a trolling reel to allow yourself to cast. A surf casting reel allows you to raise the bale on the reel so that when casting the line can feed out in large unencumbered loops and let you throw your bait or lure a long way out into the water. Once the cast is complete you just reel in one or two cranks of the reel and the automatic bale will snap back into place. Some other surf casting reels don’t have automatic bales and you have to place the line back into the feeder guide manually.
