Shad Bait
Nothing will stimulate your senses more to the predatory power of a largemouth bass, than a surface presentation using a lure. Although the use of lures would have to be the most exciting way to catch fresh water predator fish, fresh water lures are still the most misunderstood lures used today largely due to the endless range found in tackle shops. Of course you couldn’t try them all unless of course you need to lighten the load on your wallet.
The first fresh water lure I suggest everyone should have is the Original Snake Lure by natural Motion Lures. The natural snake action on the water drive big mouth bass crazy, but the trick is to think like a snake and try to mimic the action a snake might make. Try and can cast on the edge of the shore or on a log and slowly drag the lure over the intended strike area while keeping a slow and consistent action; you need to become ‘one’ with the snake.
The next fresh water lure to have in your trusty tackle box is good quality spinner bait of numerous colors, spinner baits are probably the most versatile of lures. The one thing I really love about spinner bait lures is that you can attract Bass from a large area. Most Bass fisherman tend to shy away from spinner baits and I think it’s because most really don’t understand what the spinner bait emulates but if you can imagine a wounded or panicked bait fish in the water, erratically swimming along the top, bottom or in the thermo-cline you basically understand what this bait emulates. I am quite impartial to the Terminator spinner bait, buy a few of these and you can’t go wrong.
Buzzbaits are my next fresh water lure choice and are a great weapon for early calm water mornings, evenings, or overcast rainy days or in low light, used both in clear and muddy water. Buzzbaits are often used when water temperatures have moved up into the 60-85 degree range, which would make them primarily summer baits.
But probably the mainstay and the most popular lures used for Big Bass are Crank baits; they have to be on the list of the best all round lures for catching Big Bass. These fresh water lures come in a variety of styles, most of which imitate either minnows or shad. Some bass anglers fish exclusively with these baits, so they must be effective. Some of the more popular and effective crank baits include: Rat-L-Traps, Bomber Shad, Bandit Crankbaits, KickTail Minnows (maybe the most realistic crank bait ever), and Rapala Minnows, to name a few. The point is that crank baits have to be considered among the best bass lures.
Big Bass would have to be the top game fish in the USA, and to land one of these babies you need to get into their heads and learn to think like they think. Although it helps to have a good arsenal of fresh water lures on hand, to truly become a professor at Big Bass fishing you really have to learn their environment in which they live and really understand how these wonderful fish behave.
