I need opinions on a fishing reel!!!?
I tarpon fish alot and my 6/0 penn senator is to big. I have decided to down size and I need to know what to get either a penn senator special 3/0, the Shimano Triton, or the Shimano Speed Master. This reel needs to be a good caster and needs to be able to handle tarpon kings and cobia. Tell me WHAT YOU THINK. Ohh by the way Im going off a pier so it has to be able to get out there.
I recommend the Shimano speedmaster which comes with no levelwind and you really don’t need a levelwind.
Broken levelwind, when the fish is hooked can be a lost fish.
I would also use reelX and speedX to further help in casting and reduce friction.
A friend uses the Shimano speedmaster and all that has gone wrong is a broken handle, this is your best choice for pier fishing.
The 3/0 is a favorite and would also recommend. I would go further and change the handle on the 3/0 down the line. To give you an idea, my 3/0 are pretty vintage, they originally came with chrome brass spool and white knob handle, they will take a lot of abuse and cast rather well.
I would also look into Newell reels.
