Skin Mount
How would you mount a snake skin for framing?
I am a professional picture framer and a customer has
brought me a rattlesnake skin to frame. Not used to
dealing with animal skins. Help
Traditionally a snake skin would be mounted on a board (wood), usually with small brads stretching the the skin.
I would have a conversation with the customer asking the type (style) of room the skin will be displayed in and what color schemes are in the room.
Questions: is is a cast off slough, or is it the entire skin? How was it preserved/dried tanned? How high is the texture (will it mount paper thin, or are there horny ridges)? Is the head (skull) on the skin?
Given free reign and access to a framing shop… I’d make a long black shadow box with red acid free mat board lining, should be striking for most snake skins…. The back wall of the shadow box needs to be really stiff. Vacuum mount a couple of layers of six mount, or a piece of oil-free masonite to the red back wall. for the skin, cut your mounting tissue a good 1/8′ less than the outside edge of the snake skin. Tack tissue in place on the snake, then tack the skin in place on the back wall with a bit of release paper over the skin with a hand iron on low heat. Put your sandwich in the vacuum press and put a good cushion on top of the release paper- like a sheet of foam core- so the snake skin will smush into it if it has to. Do a lower temperture than normal and check often- but it may take a while to heat the whole pile up…
if the snake has the skull attached or has high texture that would be ruined in the vacuum press- mount a piece of felt (cut with a decorative scallop border- from scrapbooking section of store, or pinking shears from sewing section) unto the board so that 1/2″ extends beyond the edge of the skin. Make sure your felt is the type that velcro grabs to. Put a few strips of velcor the entire length to the skin. If you are not sure the velcro will stick to the skin, tack it with low temp hot glue stick. Position skin on felt.
Shadow boxes will always have dust when assembling. Do not seal it permanently until you are sure there is no dust inside.
