Outside the screened in porch, a creek ran by. Well, more like a pond that drained. The Ambassador was Mom’s, but she trusted me with it. Those Ozark mornings were well to wake in. Stumble out over crushed agate, past the croquet circle and tool shed, can of worms in hand.
There was this one spinner, red with twin silver blades. Mepps, I think. Never could get it to the back of the hole, but close was close enough. I saw the lure in it then. The maybes, swimming past the could be’s, as I wish’es lurked below.
Two Guernsey’s, looked through the barb wire, as I measured my summer at The Piney. Paint whinnied and snap peas twisted up the fence rows. I never did hear what brought Dad here in 40′, but it was Mom who brought us back in 68′.
I’d Love to tell you about the one that got away, but they never did. I caught them all. Without ever wetting my line.
