Trout and Salmon fishing tips in Upstate NY?
Im fishing the Saranac River in upstate NY mostly by the mouth of the river by Lake Champlain. Im a college student who has fished for years but am new to stream fishing. Ive heard that the Salmon are gonna spawn in early May… What are some good spinners to use (colors and patterns) for both Brown Trout and Salmon now? Do salmon eggs work well for fishing, ive seen them in Gander and Dicks? If so how do you fish them? What are the best lures to use for Bass at this time as well? I dont really fly fish yet (I do a little) but use a spinner real most of the time. Any tips will help! Thanks alot!
I got the chance to fish the rivers where they empty into Lake Champlain with a friend. We fished for trout and salmon with both fly fishing gear and with spinning set-ups in early may. We did well on trout with size 10 and 12 stonefly nymphs on the fly rods, but the best luck we had on salmon was barely upstream from the lake using size 3 and 4 countdown rapala’s in the fire tiger color pattern. Local bait shops near the river you are fishing will have all the latest info on what fish are being caught and on what baits and the proprieters are very helpful if you just ask. Hope you find some nice salmon.
