Spinning Reels
Fishing reels come in all shapes and sizes and determining the proper type for your self can be a daunting task. If you understand the basic of each type of fishing reel you will have a better idea of which type suites your needs.
Fishing reels primarily come in 5 categories. Essentially they are; closed face spinning reels, open faced spinning reels, bait casting reels, fly fishing reels and electric fishing reels. Here we will be discussing 3 categories, bait casting, open faced spinning, and closed face spinning reels.
When determining the type of reel that fits your need there are two factors to primarily consider. the first and possibly the most important is your skill level. The second factor is what type of fishing are you going to use the reel for. If you are a beginner you might think of buying a closed face fishing reel due to their ease of operation, lower cost, and normally they are lower in cost.
The closed face reel is the easiest to use and requires the least amount of skill to operate. The spool holding the line and the mechanical components are enclosed in a cover. There is a button on the top or back of the reel the you depress at the start of the cast and release at the end. Since the line is enclosed under a cover there is little chance of a backlash. This type pf reel is great for kids who are just learning to fish. Due to the ease of use of this type reel manufactures have geared their marketing of this type reel by developing the rod and reel combinations like the SNOOPY rod.
The spinning reel is the next in line for ease of operation. Sometimes you will hear these type of reels called open faced reels. Once you have become comfortable with the closed face reel you can move up to the spinning reel. The line is spooled onto a spool that has a larger capacity and the release mechanism is totally different. There is a wire like device on the front of the reel, called a bail, that is opened and the line is normally held with the index finger. As the cast is begun the line is released (at approx the 11 o’clock position). These reels are designed for lighter lines in the 2- 12 pound test range. A lot of anglers use this type of reel for Finesse type fishing.
The final reel in our discussion is the most difficult one to master. This reel is called the Bait Caster and may be called a Level Wind reel by some older anglers. The expectation with these types of reels is that you have a clear understanding of the purpose of the cast and how the cast and control of the reel interrelate. You also need to understand how different weights affect the cast ability of the reel. Also there are mechanical devices on the reel that allow you to adjust for the lure weight and wind conditions. But once you have developed the understanding of how this type of reel works you will enjoy using them. But for sure there will be times that you will be faced with that ugly backlash no matter how good you are.
