Stick Night
walking swiftly
avenue throbbing
cars passing by,
spitting fumes
high,
into the sky
buses stopping and going
pick up their fares
taxis perusing around
crowded street lanes
walking as swiftly-
purposeful
as one can try to be,
undistracted by the shrieks
of tires
in their incessant role
on the pot-holed and paved
black hot tar street,
heated by the sun
a hot day in June;
passing the streets
drug-ridden with blight
cleaning out cobwebs
inside of the mind
quiet concentration
like a knotted fist,
wondering about
all that we’ve missed
coming home late
for no reason or rhyme,
singing a song
counting the time
walking through the park
instead of the street,
the trees gently breathing
in summer sun’s heat.
Cold night
Vodka bottle
side of the street
empty, lying
beneath tired feet;
whose lips sucked upon
your bottle sweet,
whose did you
rise up to meet;
comforting song
of sinner’s blood,
of the gates of Hades
of tortured love;
of time standing straight
as the straightest street pole
of death’s tenacious tenuous hold;
of comfort warm
inside your mind
standing completely
still in time;
the second hand slowly tics and tocs-
-the emptiness
inside
the bottle’s love;
empty heart
and mindless days-
mindless haze, half-crazed
and dazed;
who will fall into the lasso
of the empty bottle’s
perilous grasp-
the poisoned liquid silver dew,
between life and death
and winter chill
between a lions’ breath
and a serpent’s bite
between the poison stings of
mindless fright;
the wintry, windy frozen blast,
a cold and windy day has passed
at last-
passes to night
in sorrow’s glass;
as pigeon’s fly
in sudden fright
as a cold January day,
turns into
a still colder night.

Dawn of a New Discovery: Inspiring World Poems
This is a small collection of poems, original and from several sources, that is hoped to inspire interest in writing and reading poetry. The poetry presents a kaleidoscope of ideas concerning lands, spirituality, children and youths, oppression and violence, school life and struggles, as well as painting a picture of hope.
The poetry included from some of the more well-known poets will hopefully educate the reader on the history of poetry, and give him or her a measuring stick to evaluate the poetry that they might write themselves and encouragement to write poetry. There is a small section on how to write poetry for youths.
Some of the best youth poets can be found in the inner cities such as in Newark, New Jersey, where this collection was compiled, and a few of their poems are included. In today’s highly charged musical world, poetry has become an essential part of life.
