I have a cichlid beating up my tiger barb! what do I do?!?
I have 1 zebra cichlid (I think that’s what it is. Its blue with black vertical stripes), i also have 1 tiger barb, 1 rainbow shark and 1 algae eater. they are all in a 10 gallon tank together. what is concerning me is that my cichlid is ripping off all of my tiger barbs fins. the tiger barb doesnt nip at the cichlid at all but I dont know how to get the cichlid to stop beating the tiger barb up. I cant move them to another tank and i can not separate them. I have hiding places like a cave and several plants but that doesnt seem to help. Anybody who knows anything about fish, please help me out here. I dont want my tigere barb to be terrorized to death! Thanks!!
A zebra cichlid is not actually a species but a type, most commonly, it’s any one of several Mbuna types, and if I had to guess, something in the Pseudotropheus group.
Either way, you can’t keep a fish like that in a 10 gallon tank. It might be small now, but when you get fish, you should keep in mind the adult sizes. In a 10 gallon tank, that’s like putting a tiger in a closet, with a person, and figure who’s going to come out on top of that one.
Tiger barbs also aren’t the type of species you want to mix with Africans either. Tiger barbs belong in groups of about 6-10 and they are nippy by nature. Tiger barbs would best be kept with other barbs or in a group of dither fish, but as well, in a larger tank then a 10.
I would either get a larger tank, or you should return the stock you have now. Both species miss, are going to get too large for a 10 by adulthood.
