Trap Pot

Trap Pot
Why is my Venus fly trap dying ?

I haven’t had it for long, its been in sunshine it has water and is eating flys but its going black.
I recently re-potted it but it started going black over a week after.

Why is it dying?

Congratulations on your new Venus flytrap! In order to know what’s wrong with your plant, I’m going to need a bit more information. When you repotted it, what kind of soil did you put it in? How much direct sunlight or artificial light have you been giving it per day? What kind of water are you using to water it with?

Venus flytraps are very sensitive to minerals in the soil and in water, so if you aren’t using clean water (rain water or distilled water) or you potted it in regular potting soil, that’s probably the cause of its sickness. Also, they need a ton of light every day, so if don’t have it in a very sunny location, that could also be why it’s struggling.

Here are some more details and tips. There are really only 4 things Venus Fly Traps require to stay healthy:
1. Sunlight – at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day
2. Water – rain, distilled or reverse osmosis water only
3. Soil – Nutrient poor soil such as peat moss
4. Dormancy – Venus Fly Traps require a 3-4 month dormancy period

Venus fly traps like lots of light. Try to give it at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. The more you can give it the better. It is best to grow your fly trap outside where it can get plenty of sun and catch its own food. You don’t actually have to feed a Venus Fly Trap anything other than sunlight and water. If you do choose to feed it, it only needs a few bugs a month and don’t feed it anything other than insects.

Venus fly traps need clean water. Usually tap water will not do. It is best to use distilled water, rain water, or reverse osmosis water. Venus fly traps need water with a TDS (total dissolved solids) measurement of 50 ppm (parts per million) or less. In order to get this, you probably need to buy distilled water or reverse osmosis water or collect rain water. Their soil should be kept moist at all times except during the winter when it should be just barely damp. It is best to use a tray and set the plant in an inch or two of water. You should let the tray dry out for a day or two between waterings and longer (6 to 8 days) when the plant is dormant.

For soil you can use a combination of peat moss and perlite. Most growers use a 50:50 mix of peat moss and perlite. Venus Fly Traps aren’t picky, but be sure to use some form of peat moss or sphagnum peat moss with perlite or silica sand to ensure that the media is nutrient poor. Also, deep pots help the plant grow larger and stronger by giving them more room for their roots.

Finally, without a dormancy period, your plant’s health will start to decline and it will eventually die. Your plant should be dormant right now. You can read more about dormancy here:

Nature provides this remarkable plant with “traps” to lure and capture it’s food. The traps are covered inside by tiny hairs and a sticky sweet smelling substance attractive to insects. When an insect touches the trigger hair, the trap is activated and closes around it’s victim. After digestion of it’s meal (whick takes several days), the trap will open again for a new catch. Keep moist at all tim…

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS: Carnivorous plants have the most bizarre adaptations to low-nutrient environments. These plants obtain some nutrients by trapping and digesting various invertebrates. Because insects are one of the most common prey items for most carnivorous plants, they are sometimes called insectivorous plants. It is not surprising that the most common habitat for these plants is in bogs an…
