How to troll for walleye on lake Erie?
Can anyone tell me how troll for walleye on lake erie? What equipment do i need like planer boards and so on and is there any type of rods i need. please tell me everything i need 2 no thanks.
I have never fished Lake Erie personally, but I have trolled for walleyes extensively. Here in MI we can fish with 3 lines per angler, so I can use planer boards and experiment with different baits to see what the walleyes are biting on. Check the fishing regulations for the state you’re from (or going to fish out of) for how many rods each angler can use, and how big walleye have to be to be legal, and how many you can keep. For trolling for walleye I like to use line counter reels (I like to fill my reels with Trilene XT in 10 lb. test), and trolling-specific rods. I have some that are designed for planer boards, some for bottom bouncers, and some for crank baits, and they run from 8′ 6″ to 12′. You should have rod holders to put your rods in while trolling…my Lund has a feature that they call SportTrak…it’s a rail that goes around the edge of the boat where you can mount accessories without drilling holes…I have my rod holders set up here, and I can move them to where they best suit myself or who ever is fishing with me. I use Ram rod holders…you can adjust the angle you want, both horizontal and vertical, and they hold the rod securely. As far as planer boards go…I use Off Shore boards…they’re easy to use, and with the flag it’s easy to pick up on light bites…the flag tension is adjustable. You can also get lights for night fishing for your boards. You’ll need a variety of weights…bottom bouncers, snap weights and keel weights all have their place, and you’ll need an assortment of different weights. For lures you’ll be using basically ‘crawler harnesses (some places call them spinners), crank baits, and spoons. As far as the harnesses go, I like to tie my own, in lengths from 3′ to 6′, and use a quick-change clevis. That way I don’t need to have a lot of pre-tied harnesses with different combinations of beads, floats, and blades…I can just change the blade. Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, and Jann’s Netcraft all carry components for making your own harnesses, and they have a good assortment of blades in the Colorado, Indiana and Willow Leaf, as well as some more specialized ones. One of those foam “noodles” that kids play in the water with work well to organize your harnesses on and keep them tangle-free. Get a copy of Precision Trolling…it has pages and pages of how deep crank baits dive with a measured amount of line out. Get a variety of crank baits that will dive to different depths. Last but certainly not least, you need to know how fast you’re going…most times you’ll be trolling 1 to 1.5 mph. You may need a drift sock or two to get your boat at the proper speed. This covers the equipment and tackle you need for trolling for walleyes. It’s not a complete list, but it should get you started.
